Macworld anouncements : deceptive at least!

January 6th, 2009

Phil Schiffer announced 3 new products, iLife’09, iWork’09 and the new MacBook Pro 17″.

The iLife’09 suite is an improved iLife’08 suite in 4-ways:

  1. iPhoto’09 support face detection, recognition and geotaggingm, as well as flicker and facebook intercations. Nice but probably not worth the switch.
  2. GarageBand’09 adds new lessons from celebrities (9 basic piano and 9 basic guitar), with the ability to buy others online. hum.
  3. iWeb’09 support new Web Widgets, including facebook alerts, countdowns, etc. and more important the ability to finally sync using FTP with any hosting :-)
  4. iMovie’09 offers new editing functions, with more precision and more control, more effects (real-time :-) ), and an anti-shake technology that works!

Nothing that will make me upgrade from iLife’08 to iLife’09, albeit I will to have an extensive test of the new features of iLife!

The iWork’09 is an improved version of iWork, with the ability to post comments online to a document uploaded in iwork.com , without real sharing or groupware functions. Just too short baby!

MacBook Pro 17″ is the same as the MacBook Pro 15″, with some differences, 4-5% facter CPU (nobody will notice), 17″ 1920×1200 screen (everybody will notice!), integrated non-replaceable battery with 8 hours autonomy (waow!), but a tag price that offers you Quad-core laptop with twice the CPU and GPU speed, and twice (if not more) the hard-drive space and speed!

For me the MacBook Pro is totally deceptive because of it’s performance-level related to it’s price tag!

Finally, no new Mac Mini, no new iMac, no new MacPro (with Core i7 derived Xeon’s), no Snow Leopard presentation, and no fun :-(

MacWorld Rumors…

January 6th, 2009

There’s many rumors about the MacWorld and new Mac hardware and software. I will just sum them up and give my thinking about them (not their probabibility, it’s an uncertain game with Apple :-) )

  • 32GB iPhone: sure it will come one day, may be today, may be this summer, may be next year. Not a big deal (but perfect for me ;-) )
  • New Mac Mini, with GeForce 9400 chipset, 4GB RAM support (instead actual 3.3GB), and the crappy mini Display Port. not a big deal too, just a minor enhancement!
  • iWork on cloud (web application): may be just fine to do lightweight work from a PC, but I will still cope with the offline software for my real work on my Mac!
  • iMovie on cloud: you seriously wanna upload 10GB of HD movie on Internet to edit it? it’s 30hours just to upload it from my high-speed home cable connection!
  • New Cinema Display : DRM integration and mini crappy DisplayPort, I will prefer to keep to old ones!
  • new iMac, with Core i5 and Core i7, will make me switch to a desktop Mac (Core i5), or kill for it (Core i7) :-)

The point is that Apple will probably unveil anything else than really expected ;-)
