The new Mac Mini!

March 3rd, 2009

At least the new Mac Mini, that is the only real upgrade on the new Mac desktop line, and probably the only one that is better than is predecessor:

Apple changed the GPU from GMA950 (Integrated Intel) to GeForce 9400 (Integrated nVidia) that offers full HD output and move capability, and the ability to play old games on low res.

Processors stays almost identical, RAM changed from DDR2 to DDR3 without any real-world performance gain (you will see the tag price difference ;-) ) and enable to upgrade to 4GB instead 3.3GB before, the low-end offers a SuperDrive (at least) and the biggest a 320GB hard-drive.

Nothing astonishing, but more Mac for your money!

New Quad-Core iMac?

January 27th, 2009

There’s rumors about a quad-core iMac, and others about just faster dual-core iMac.

Maybe we will see another scenario: a physicial dual-core iMac that execute 4-threads at once?

Intel released the Core i7 Quad-Core/8-Threads processor with fast 3-way DDR-3 memory interface and plan to release a low-end version with Dual-Core/4Threads and 2-way DDR-3 memory interface, that consume far less power (dissipate less heat too :-) ) and maybe the best fit to offer faster iMac (up to 50% faster) while retaining the current design.

So if Apple choose the Core i5, it will offer the performance-level of first generation MacPro (4×2.0Ghz basic confi), while being slower than actual 2.66Ghz real Quad-Core actual MacPro.

Mini DisplayPort and Apple’s lies

January 5th, 2009

Apple implemented the “mini DisplayPort” on the new MacBook & MacBook Pro, presenting this port as an “Industry standard” and an improvement (on MacBook) being able to handle a 30″ LCD display in full native resolution (2560×1600).

  • mini DisplayPort is physically uncompatible with DisplayPort
  • mini DisplayPort is a proprietary port licensed by Apple to whom it want (or not!)
  • mini DisplayPort adapters for VGA, DVI or HDMI are expensier than DVI adapters
  • mini DisplayPort adapter for 30″ LCD isn’t there, a quarter after the MacBook & MacBook Pro that implement it!
  • proprietary of brand new unibody MacBook Pro are unable to use a 30″ LCD contrary to aluminium MacBook Pro and even my old PowerBook G4 from 2005!
  • proprietary of brand new unibody MacBook & MacBook Pro spend more to connecte their Apple laptop to their displays
  • proprietary of brand new unibody MacBook & MacBook Pro have to spend money to connect to a DVI display (such as the Apple’s 20″ LCD)

Apple lied when it announce that the “mini DisplayPort” is a standard, it’s just a proprietary ill-conceived port, that just couldn’t handle the Apple’s (or Dell) 30″ LCD, and in any other case make MacBook & MacBook Pro owner’s spend more and more money!

Stop using this “mini DisplayPort”, Apple, and come back to DVI-D!

New MacBook & MacBook Pro sleep issues

December 9th, 2008

Ven, the graphical designer that work with me on the company website, has problems with it’s new MacBook Pro Unibody.

some MacBook Pro seems to be insomniacs

some MacBook Pro seems to be insomniacs

Typically the MacBook Pro go to sleep when lid is closed, and then wake up minutes later, overheating while closed (fans doesn’t seems to start!), and surface where really hot when he discover that.

We found many witnesses of some related problems on the Web, with new MacBook or MacBook Pro refusing to go awake from sleeping mode, rebooting when awaking, awaking themselves and overheaten, making battery dies in hours (while theorically in sleep mode), and so on.

After the trackpad problems, the GeForce 9600M GT videocard black-screen of death, the third-party RAM problems, now there’s sleep/awaking problems!

These new MacBook & MacBook Pro seems really badly conceived from scratch.

nVidia’s GPU again!

December 3rd, 2008

The old MacBook Pro equipped with nVidia’s GeForce 8600M GT have some problems to resist it’s own heat, some laptops finishing with a black screen ou fuzzy lines after 3D games play, needin’ motherboard replacement. Apple extended their GPU warranty to 3 years, not solving the problem at all.

MacBook Pro w/ GeForce 9600M GT

The new MacBook Pro comes with a nVidia’s GeForce 9600M GT that seems to be overheaten (again), ending with black screens. Hopefully the laptop seems to be alive after a reset.

But the main reason to choose a MacBook Pro over a MacBook is the integrated GeForce 9600M GT 3D GPU able to give 3X to 5X more game speed, or to enable real CUDA computations.

What will Apple do this time?
